1st Stroke Review Course
25-27 March, 2009

It was the effort of Dr. Ali Al-Shehri (Neurology fellow) and Dr. Ali Al-Khathaami (Consultant neurologist), both form King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh and members to the association, that produced a high quality 1st stroke review course for residents.
This course took place in Qasr Abha Hotel, in the charming city of Abha, on Wednesday and Thursday, 25-26 March 2009. The speakers were carefully selected to meet the objective of the course, and they included:

The course was attended by 40 residents, most were in neurology training programs. Number of high quality lectures were delivered on different aspects of stroke which included (SSA members can log in member area to see presentations):
Also, the course included interesting interactive case presentations and workshops, that covered the following topics:

TIA : diagnosis, risk stratification and management

Practical issues in Management of Hypertension and High Cholesterol

ASA, Plavix and Aggrenox: Selecting the Appropriate Antithrombotic for the Right Patient

tPA: Yes or No?

Prognosis & complications of stroke
The course concluded with an interesting debate on Carotid Endarterectomy vs Carotid Stenting.
Each resident received a certificate of attendance, that worth 14 CME hours
Based on the residents, the course received an average overall evaluation of 4.36 out of 5, and they recommended the following:
- More workshops, less lectures (make use of voting system)
- Repeat Annually – high rate
- Localization (stroke syndromes)
- More clinically related neuroradiology
- Small group discussion
- Stroke and Anticoagulant
- Workshop on TCD
- Stroke in sickle cell diseaes
- Local participation of speakers from same area of the course
- International Speakers
- Handouts before workshops
- Post workshop quiz
- More social activities
- Better announcement of course (notify program directors in neurology and medicine)
